Postural Misalignment & Scoliosis
Postural Misalignment & Scoliosis
A good posture is essential to avoid and prevent injuries and allow us to move through an entire range of motion. Poor postures can cause rounded shoulders, muscle imbalances, neck pain, and cartilage degeneration which causes pain, muscle fatigue, a protruding belly, and overall body aches. Not only those, but poor postures can also cause decreased blood flow and decreased spine mobility.

Scoliosis is a spinal disorder where the spine curves to one side or the other resembling the letter ‘S’ or ‘C,’ and it can be seen when looking from the back or the front. It often occurs in childhood and adolescence.
Symptoms & Causes of Postural Misalignment & Scoliosis
The symptoms of postural misalignment & scoliosis are:
-
Pain in the shoulder or neck
-
Pain in lower back or neck
-
Decreased in flexibility
-
Muscle spasms
-
Headaches caused by tension
-
Inflammation and swelling
-
Numbness, tingling, or nerve pain in the arms

There are many causes of postural misalignments, such as:
-
Being in a single position for a very long period in a day (e.g.: gaming)
-
Joint stiffness
-
Weak core muscles, back, pelvis, and buttocks (cause instability in the body which leads to improper posture)
The cause for scoliosis is thought to have a genetic link and may run in families. In addition, certain neurological conditions in children, such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or neurofibromatosis, can lead to scoliosis because the spine has not developed well.
Treatment for Postural Misalignment & Scoliosis
Physiotherapy can help by decreasing stiffness and restrictions and improving muscle strength to improve posture. This improvement in posture can enable our muscles to move and work efficiently and reduces stress on the joint surfaces and ligaments that hold our skeleton together. Therefore, our body can use less energy during movement.

Our physiotherapists at Fizo Kare Physiotherapy can solve these issues by providing an assessment to identify which structures are shortened and which need strengthening. Then, an individualised treatment plan will be customised and designed according to the patient’s postural assessment, symptoms, daily activities, and needs. Other treatment modalities are also provided to reduce the impact of psychosocial factors on the pain and symptoms.
